0-position
Il n'y a rien à chercher dans la position du diagramme. There is nothing to search in the diagram position.

Annihilation
Une pièce est annihilée quand elle disparaît définitivement de l'échiquier.
En orthodoxe, une pièce est annihilée quand elle est capturée ; mais ce n'est pas le cas avec certaines règles féeriques (voir Circé par exemple).
A piece is annihilated when it definitively disappears from the board.
In orthodox Chess, a piece is annihilated when it is captured ; but this is not the case with some fairy rules (see Circé for instance).

Anti-batterie - Anti-battery
Deux pièces d'un même camp, la "pièce avant" et la "pièce arrière" forment :
  • une anti-batterie (directe) si la présence de la pièce avant permet à la pièce arrière de menacer le Roi adverse.
  • une anti-batterie indirecte si la présence de la pièce avant permet à la pièce arrière de contrôler une case du champ royal adverse.
Two units of the same side, the "front piece" and the "rear piece" form :
  • a (direct) anti-battery if the presence of the front piece allows the rear piece to threaten the opposite King.
  • an indirect anti-battery if the presence of the front piece allows the rear piece to control a square of the opposite King's field.

Auto-blocage - Self-block
Auto-blocage : une pièce joue sur une case de son champ royal.
Auto-blocage lointain
: une pièce joue sur une case qui va devenir une case de son champ royal.
Self-block : A piece moves in its own King field.
Anticipatory self-block
: a piece moves to a square which will be in its own King field

Auto-échec - Self-check
Coup amenant une position dans laquelle le camp qui l'a joué est en échec. Move bringing a position in which the side who has played it is in check.

Auto-pat - Self-stalemate
Un auto-pat est un coup après le quel le camp qui l'a joué est pat. A Self-stalemate is a move after which the side who played it is stalemate.

Batterie - Battery
Deux pièces d'un même camp, la "pièce avant" et la "pièce arrière" forment :
  • une batterie (directe) si l'absence de la pièce avant permet à la pièce arrière de menacer le Roi adverse.
  • une batterie indirecte si l'absence de la pièce avant permet à la pièce arrière de contrôler une case du champ royal adverse.

Clouage... - Pinning...
Une pièce est clouée si, étant absente de l'échiquier, son Roi pourrait être capturé par une pièce qui ne le peut pas en sa présence.
Le clouage est absolu si la pièce clouée ne peut jouer aucun coup légal.
Le clouage est effectif si la pièce clouée pourrait jouer en l'absence de la pièce clouante.

Clouage : coup clouant une pièce du camp adverse.

  • Le clouage est direct si la pièce nouvellement clouée l'est par la pièce ayant joué.
  • Le clouage est indirect sinon.

Déclouage : coup déclouant une pièce du camp adverse.

  • Le déclouage est direct si la pièce nouvellement déclouée l'a été par la pièce ayant joué.
  • Le déclouage est indirect sinon.

Auto-clouage : coup clouant une pièce de son propre camp.

  • L'Autoclouage est direct si la pièce nouvellement clouée est la pièce ayant joué.
  • L'Autoclouage est indirect sinon.

Auto-déclouage : coup déclouant une pièce de son propre camp.

  • L'Autodéclouage est direct si la pièce nouvellement déclouée est la pièce ayant joué.

A piece is pinned if, not being on the board, its King could be captured by a piece which can't do it because it is there.
Pinning is absolute if the pinned piece has no legal move.
Pinning is effective if the pinned piece could move if the pinning piece was not there.

Pin : move pinning a unit of the opposite side.

  • The pin is direct if the newly pinned unit is pinned by the piece which has moved.
  • Otherwise, the pin is indirect.

Unpin : move unpinning a unit of the opposite side.

  • The unpin is direct (by withdrawal) if the newly unpinned unit has been unpinned by the piece which has moved.
  • Otherwise, the unpin is indirect (by interference).

Selfpin : move pinning a unit of its own side.

  • The selfpin is direct if the newly pinned unit is the piece which has moved.
  • Otherwise, the selfpin is indirect.

Self-unpin : move unpinning a unit of its own side.

  • The selfunpin is direct if the newly unpinned unit is the piece which has moved.
  • Otherwise, the selfunpin is indirect.

Coup légal - Legal move
Coup possible après lequel le camp qui l'a joué n'est pas en échec. (Un coup légal est un coup possible qui n'est pas un auto-échec). Possible move after which the side who has played it is not in check. (A legal move is a possible move which is not a self-check).

Demi-batterie - Half-battery
Trois pièces d'un même camp (deux "pièces avant" et une "pièce arrière") forment une demi-batterie si l'absence d'une des pièces avant permet aux deux autres de former une batterie. Three units of the same side (two "front pieces" and a "rear piece") form a half-battery if the absence of one of the front piece allows the two other pieces to form a battery.

Demi-clouage - Half-pin
Deux pièces d'un même camp sont demi-clouées si l'absence de l'une cloue l'autre (auto-clouage indirect). Le demi-clouage n'est effectif que si les 2 auto-clouages ont lieu.
Trois pièces d'un même camp sont tiers-clouées si l'absence de l'une demi-cloue les 2 autres...
Two pieces of the same side are half-pinned if the absence of one of them pins the other unit (indirect self-pin). The half-pin is real only if the 2 self-pins are made.
Three pieces of the same side are Third-pinned if the absence of one of them half-pins the 2 other units...

Échec - Check
Coup amenant une position où le camp adverse est en échec. Move bringing a position in which the opposite side is in check.

En échec - In check
Un camp est en échec si son Roi est menacé d'être annihilé. A side is in check if his King is threatened to be annihilated.

Mansube
Problème direct dans lequel la clé est aussi le seul coup permettant de gagner. Les premiers problèmes (composés vers le IX° siècle probablement) étaient des Mansube. Direct problem in which the key is also the only move allowing to win. The first problems (probably composed about the 9th century) were Mansube.

Mat - Mate
Un camp est mat quand il est en échec et qu'il ne peut jouer aucun coup légal.
Un mat est un coup après le quel le camp adverse est mat.
A side is mate when he is in check and he cannot play any legal move.
A mate is a move after which the opposite side is mate.

Menace, Contrôle - Threat, Control
 - Une pièce est menacée (en prise) si le camp adverse, s'il avait le trait, pouvait la capturer.
 - Une pièce est menacée d'être annihilée si le camp adverse, s'il avait le trait, pouvait l'annihiler.
 - Une pièce est controlée si elle pourrait être capturée par une pièce de son propre camp.
 - A piece est threatened if the opposite side, if he had to move, could capture it.
 - A piece est threatened to be annihilated if the opposite side, if he had to move, could annihilate it.
 - A piece is controlled if it could be captured by a piece of its own side.

Problème avec au plus 12 pièces. Problem with 12 pieces at the most.

Miniature
Problème avec au plus 7 pièces. Problem with 7 pieces at the most.

Pat - Stalemate
Un camp est pat quand il n'est pas en échec et qu'il ne peut jouer aucun coup légal.
Un pat est un coup après le quel le camp adverse est pat.
A side is stalemate when he is not in check and he cannot play any legal move.
A stalemate is a move after which the opposite side is stalemate.

Tanagra
Problème avec au plus 5 pièces. Problem with 5 pieces at the most.

Tiers-batterie - Third-battery
Quatre pièces d'un même camp (trois "pièces avant" et une "pièce arrière") forment une tiers-batterie si l'absence d'une des pièces avant permet aux trois autres de former une demi-batterie. Four units of the same side (three "front pieces" and a "rear piece") form a third-battery if the absence of one of the front piece allows the three other pieces to form a half-battery.
